The strat*plan Strategic Planning Spreadsheet concept is based on a time-proven approach to strategic planning, namely:
Define a three to five-year vision and Core Values for the organization
Assess the internal and external factors affecting the organization, and develop potential strategies to leverage opportunities or mitigate potential risks.
Prioritize and synthesize these potential strategies into a clear Mission—aligned with the long-term vision—to be achieved over the next 12–18 months, along with its corresponding Critical Goal Categories or CGCs (also known as Key Result Areas or Critical Success Factors)
For each CGC, define clear SMART goals and corresponding action steps, specifying accountable owners and concrete deadlines for each.
Outlined below are the details:
Vision Statement: The process begins with the Leadership Team establishing a vision of where or who they want the organization to be in the future compared to who or where it is now. A compelling vision is a powerful force that generates energy and focus on the organization's direction and future; a Vision Statement, in effect, sets the organization's strategic direction, usually over the next three to five years.
strat*plan provides sample statement templates to help the organization’s leadership draft appropriate Vision Statements.
Core Values: The Leadership Team then proceeds to define the fundamental principles that guide the organization’s decisions, behavior, and long-term direction. While strategy determines where an organization is going, Core Values determine how it gets there—informing hiring, performance standards, brand trust, and tough trade-offs. Without clear values, decisions default to short-term pressures, leading to inconsistency and drift; with them, organizations achieve alignment, discipline, and long-term coherence.
strat*plan provides sample cues for key, industry-oriented Core Value categories that guide the organization’s leadership in defining the most appropriate Core Values for their enterprise.
External Assessment and Internal Appraisal: This is the point where strategy begins to move from aspiration to implementation. In this phase, we confront the realities shaping our enterprise—systematically identifying external opportunities and threats, while candidly assessing the internal strengths and weaknesses that define our capacity to respond.
strat*plan provides structured templates featuring industry-relevant diagnostic factors and substantive example cues to help leadership identify the most meaningful opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses. These inputs automatically populate the subsequent SWOT analysis section.
SWOT Analysis: The Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis is a classic methodology that helps transform assessment into action, aligning strengths with opportunities, exposing vulnerabilities to threats, and clarifying where strategy must compete and win.
strat*plan provides a framework designed for conducting SWOT analysis in a way that directly informs the formulation and prioritization of strategies.
Short-Term Mission Statement: The clarity gained from the preceding analyses establishes the foundation for defining what must be accomplished over the next 12 to 18 months to make measurable progress toward the three- to five-year vision. This Short-Term Mission Statement articulates a focused direction—aligning the organization’s personnel with where it is headed and what it must achieve during that defined period.
strat*plan again provides themed-framed statement samples to help the organization’s leadership draft appropriate Short-Term Mission Statements.
Critical Goal Categories: To achieve the Short-Term Mission, a small set of necessary and sufficient outcomes must be realized. We define these as Critical Goal Categories—essential performance domains that must be successfully advanced throughout the mission period. Typically limited to three or five, they are intentionally more specific than the mission itself, yet broader than individual goals.
strat*plan guides the planning leadership team in defining, with clarity and precision, the few Critical Goal Categories required to fulfill the organization’s Vision and Short-Term Mission.
SMART Goals & Action Steps: To achieve each Critical Success Factor within the defined timeframe, SMART goals are then established; these goals are more specific than the Critical Success Factors, yet broader than the detailed action plans. In turn, detailed action steps are then developed for each SMART goal, outlining clear, concrete steps and explicitly defining who will do what by when.
strat*plan provides separate, downloadable control templates for each Critical Goal Category. These templates enable the leadership members responsible for each category to translate priorities into specific SMART goals and clearly defined action steps, and to track their execution systematically.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Optionally, KPIs are established to translate goals into quantifiable outcomes, enabling the organization to evaluate performance objectively. By providing timely, data-driven insights, KPIs support informed decision-making, accountability, and continuous improvement, ensuring resources and efforts remain aligned with priorities and desired results.
strat*plan provides industry-specific templates to help the leadership team establish metrics appropriate to their type of organization.
One-Page Strategic Plan: A strategic plan depicted in a single page condenses vision, priorities, and key goals into a clear, concise format that everyone can understand. Its simplicity improves alignment, focus, and accountability by making strategy visible and actionable. With everything on one page, teams can quickly reference, communicate, and execute the plan consistently.
strat*plan automatically generates a One-Page Strategic Plan. As the planning process progresses, the software captures the essential components and seamlessly compiles them into a single, integrated plan page. The One-Page Strategic Plan remains fully editable, allowing users to refine and adjust it as needed.
